Brannan Park is a great day trip from Auburn because it features one of the city’s most heavily used sports complexes. The City of Auburn sponsors numerous sports events at Brannan Park. Cascade Middle School students, as well as various organizations such as youth soccer leagues and little leagues, make extensive use of the playing fields. Brannan Park is located on a flat, open area with the Green River serving as its eastern boundary. A circular path within the park will eventually join the Green River Trail. The remaining boundaries are surrounded by residential housing that is readily seen from the park.
On October 19, volunteers from the Auburn community and The Auburn Food Bank teamed up with KaBOOM! and Delta Air Lines to construct a new playground. Over 250 individuals belonging to community organizations, service clubs, businesses, faith-based groups, scout troops, schools, social service organizations, families, and individual citizens joined forces with Delta Air Lines personnel and representatives from KaBOOM! in transforming the area in just six hours. The majority of the money for the playground came from Delta Air Lines, who allowed their workers to volunteer to help build it, and they made an additional gift of $10,000 to the Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Department and $10,000 to the Auburn Food Bank.
The park was named for the Brannan brothers, William and Joseph, who settled in the White River Valley in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1838, William and his wife were murdered during the early Indian conflicts. Joseph married Sarah Henness in 1857. They acquired the Meeker Farm in Kent in 1858 before moving to their donation claim near Auburn a year later. The park was dedicated in 1966 after it had been created over a period of several years.
Brannan Park, which is near the center of Auburn, is a popular local park frequented by locals. Brannan has little worth traveling far to see, but if you are riding the Green River Trail, you’ll go around the edge of the park. The facilities are mostly geared to pleasant baseball fields. There’s a skate park and a tiny children’s play area as well as several picnic areas!
